Robertson is an integral part of the Breede River Winelands region and lies in the shadow of the majestic Langeberg Mountains with a river as its vital lifesource. It is the western gateway to the world renowned Route 62 and has a history that goes back 150 years. This particular area has grown into one of the most attractive of the winelands towns, with Victorian buildings, streets lined with jacarandas and stunning gardens.
The town was founded in 1853 and named after the Scottish minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, Dr William Robertson. Initially, the economy was driven by farming and wagon building, but after the Anglo Boer War in 1898, the introduction of the railway ground wagon building to a halt. The area then became known for its ostrich farming, which collapsed after the First World War and farmers turned their energies towards wine and fruit production.
Robertson is a world renowned race horse stud and breeding area, producing some of the best racehorses that South Africa has to offer. It is also well known for its fruit farms and vineyards, as well as being one of the pioneers for organic wine production. There are a number of olive farms that have started to develop here as well. With such a diverse industry and stunning surroundings, it’s no wonder that property in Robertson is so sought after in the Breede River region. |
