Riebeek Kasteel is a quaint rural village located in the Western Cape’s Swartland region that owes its name to Jan van Riebeeck, who was the first to land at the Cape coast and settle in South Africa. There is a long history of viticulture here, with the prominent wine farms of Kloovenburg and Allesverloren first being established in the 1700s.
The population in Riebeek Kasteel is descended from all kinds of natives, early settlers and a new generation of city dwellers tired of the rat race, as well as immigrants from abroad. This gives the community a healthy eclectic mix and this vibrant cross culture makes for an interesting atmosphere. The surrounding landscape is simply sublime, with wheat fields, olive groves and vineyards extending for miles on end.
Before the arrival of settlers in the area, the Riebeek Kasteel Valley was a plain filled with wildlife and there is evidence that early tribesmen had resided here for millennia. One of Jan van Riebeeck’s corporals, Pieter Cruythoff summated the neck of the mountain and named it Kasteelberg in his mentor’s honour. This picturesque village offers one of the most rewarding and fulfilling country lifestyles in the Swartland and it is no wonder that property in Riebeek Kasteel is so popular. |
