Napier is a rural village in the Western Cape’s Overberg region that is primarily geared towards agricultural production. The road here takes you through endless fields of wheat and barley that grow in the shadow of the Soetmuisberg Mountain. The southernmost region in Africa, this particular area is known for its old world charm and tranquil beauty. There are age-old cottages that blend in with modern homes to give a delightful contrast to this rural village.
Named after a former Cape governor, Sir George Napier, it was first established by Michiel van Breda and his neighbour van der Byl when they couldn’t agree on where the community church should be situated. The result was two separate churches and two separate towns, with the other being Bredasdorp. At the turn of the century, prospectors found gold on the Hansiesrivier farm and established a gold mining company, but it was short lived.
The Dutch Reformed Church in Napier has a rather unusual style of architecture and a teak interior. The Feeshuis is another historical building in the town and was restored in 1988 to celebrate the town’s 150th anniversary. It was first used as slave quarters and then as a wine cellar. Other interesting attractions include the Kakebeenwa monument that commemorates the Ossewa Trek and the watermill and sundial at the municipal offices. If you are interested in farming or a country lifestyle then property in Napier is a sound investment bet. |
