Hermanus is a vibrant seaside town situated in the Overberg region of the Western Cape that takes its name from an itinerant teacher and sheep farmer who first settled in the area. He arrived at the Cape in the 1800s and brought his sheep to the coast for better grazing. Later it was fishermen and holidaymakers who frequented this particular region and a village soon developed.
Renowned as being one of the best land based whale watching locations in the world, Hermanus even has its own whale crier to announce the sighting of whales with a kelp horn. There can be nothing more enthralling than watching these majestic marine creatures go about their daily business in the bay. The Old Harbour Museum is another interesting attraction here that houses a display of an old sea wall, fishing boats and reconstructed fishing huts.
The Hermanus wine route provides residents and visitors with the opportunity to explore the Hemel and Aarde Valley and is just 2 kilometres outside of town. The area has made a name for itself when it comes to the quality Burgundy varieties of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The more adventurous at heart can take part in cage diving and watch the Great White Sharks in action. If you aren’t comfortable with actually joining them in the water then you can always watch from the surface as they feed. Property in Hermanus is ideal for investors looking for a holiday home or place to retire. |
