Hartenbos is a town on the Garden Route that lies close the industrial side of Mossel Bay, known as Voorbaai. The seaside resort lies on the banks of a river and is an extremely popular holiday destination during peak season, particularly December to January each year. Figures indicate that around 100 000 visitors from the interior flock to this part of the coast for a little rest and recuperation after a hard year’s work.
There are all kinds of activities to be enjoyed by residents and visitors in Hartenbos, with boating and fishing being the most popular. The resort was established in 1936 by an organization called the Afrikaans Language and Culture Organisation (ATKV), which used to be part of the South African Railways. Initially, the resort was reserved for railway workers only, but since then it has opened up to the rest of the public.
There is a 10 000 seat stadium in Hartenbos that is used for entertainment like traditional dancing, festivals and church services. The Voortrekker Museum is also here and displays ancient artifacts associated with the Great Trek. The exhibit itself includes old Bibles, clothes and two carriages that were part of the trek and owned by Magdalena de Wet and Andries Pretorius. If you are looking for property on the Garden Route then Hartenbos could be the ideal spot for you. |
