Gouritsmond is situated on the Western Cape’s Garden Route and takes its name from the Gouriqua Khoikhoi people who are native to the area. The Gourits River is the principal river in the entire southern Cape region and has a national road and railway line that crosses over a gorge 65 metres deep and 75 metres wide. Aloes cover both sides of the deep ravine and look stunning when in flower.
There is a caravan park and camp site at the river mouth in Gouritsmond, as well as a hotel to cater for the tourist sector passing through. Fishing is excellent in the area, with some of the better known spots including ‘the fisheries’, ‘bull point’ and ‘kaap vacca’. The fish caught most often are leervis, white steenbras, kob, gunter and elf varieties. Sometimes even the kabeljou make their way into the estuaries to feed on the mullet.
It is safe to swim in Gouritsmond, but the current can sometimes be treacherous and the water is extremely cold. The river is popular with powerboat fishermen and there is a launch ramp available. The area’s main drawcard is the fact that while it is quite isolated, residents still have access to all the shopping amenities in nearby Mossel Bay. If you are looking for property in a tranquil setting then Gouritsmond could well be the place for you. |
