Bredasdorp is a primarily agricultural area situated in the Western Cape’s Overberg region that claims to be the first town established in South Africa. Lying on the slopes of a fairly large hill, it is covered in giant proteas and fields of wheat. The protea is the country’s national flower and is one of the main products in this particular area.
Named after the first mayor of Cape Town, Bredasdorp is considered to be at the helm of the merino sheep farming industry, as it was here that Michiel van Breda first introduced these animals onto his farm, Zoetendals Vallei. It has developed into the economic hub of the Overberg region, particularly when it comes to farming and tourism in the outlying towns. The Heuningberg Nature Reserve is located at the top end of Riebeeck Street and provides plenty of entertainment for nature lovers and families alike.
