Betty’s Bay is a stunning Overberg town found on the Cape Whale Coast that lies just an hour’s drive outside of Cape Town. It is also located along the scenic Clarence Drive Route that extends from Pringle Bay to Kleinmond on the R44. The town itself is situated on a narrow strip of land that is sandwiched between the Kogelberg Mountains and the ocean. There are some excellent beaches here and the Hangklip dunes lie west of Stony Point, with a beach over 4 kilometres long.
Fresh water lakes and the Palmiet River provide residents and visitors with plenty of entertainment in Bettys Bay. The town is found within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, which is the first to be declared in South Africa and proudly protected by its residents. The Overberg is considered to be the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, which boasts fine examples of indigenous fynbos and has managed to remain largely untouched.
While the Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest of the world’s six plant kingdoms, it has the second biggest diversity of species. The reserve stretches from the coast in Gordons Bay all the way through to Kleinmond, as well as further inland from Elgin to Grabouw. This is a total of around 100 000 hectares of prime vegetation and picturesque natural surroundings. The penguin colony at Stony Point is one of four mainland colonies in South Africa and has been declared a municipal nature reserve. Property in Betty’s Bay is popular with holidaymakers and retirees and offers plenty of peace and quiet. |
