Beaufort West is part of the Western Cape’s Central Karoo region and lies just between the Gamka and Kuils Rivers, south of a range of hills and north of the Nuweveld Mountains. There are rocks here that date back some 230 million years, although many South Africans see it as yet another typical ‘platteland’ dorp on the way to Cape Town.
Beaufort West is the oldest town in the Central Karoo and rich in history, which attracts many scientists, historians and eco-tourists to the area. The town was first established in 1818 on the Hooyvlakte farm at the request of the Cape governor at the time. The aim was to establish and maintain law and order in the hinterland.
There are those who say that the Karoo is not so much a place as it is a feeling and that it is bound to capture your soul. Beaufort West has a claim to fame in that it was the childhood home of Professor Chris Barnard, the famous South African heart surgeon who performed the first heart transplant. Anyone wishing to buy property in a tranquil and relatively isolated location would do well to choose Beaufort West. |
